NOTE: If you have one of our HomeTroller units, do NOT use these instructions. See separate instructions for those units.
If you've been automating your home with HS3 on Linux and have purchased an upgrade to HS4, thank you for your patronage! The instructions below will walk you through installing HS4 on your Linux distribution. If you run into any questions or issues, please reach out to ushere.
NOTE: You will need your HS3 license during the registration process. If you do not have that, click here to retrieve it.
Backing up HS3
- It is essential that you create a copy of your entire HomeSeer HS3 program folder. The default file path is /usr/local/HomeSeer, be sure to make a note of the install location. Save this copy on your desktop or a flash drive (or both). If this initial copy is not created and something goes wrong in the upgrade process, you will need to recreate your setup in HS4.
- Within your HomeSeer HS3 program folder, open the Config folder and delete users.cfg and users.cfg.temp. Depending on whether file extensions are hidden or exposed on your computer, you may instead see the files above or users and users.cfg. If so, delete these two files.
- In the HS3 web interface, navigate to Tools > Setup, then locate the Configuration section. Make a note of the .hsd file currently selected in the drop-down menu and do not change it.
- Finally, shut down the HS3 software.
Installing and Setting up HS4
The installation is identical to the installation of the
HS4 tarfile.Download the tar fileand save it to the directory just above your HomeSeer directory. Normally this is /usr/local, but you might have HomeSeer installed in a different location. Untar the file with:
tar xvf [TARFILE]
This will untar the files in the directory named "HomeSeer" and will overwrite any existing files. It will not overwrite anything in the Data or Config directories or any other files that you created. Your settings should not be affected and all your plugins should run normally.
You can now run HomeSeer with the same command as
Check for errors on the console. You can now bring up a web browser and connect to your system. You will be prompted to enter your HS4 registration information.
Note: If you are having trouble viewing devices in HomeSeer Mobile, make sure the user you are logging in with, typically MyHS, is added as a User in HS4.
